Are you floating around in your career and bored to death at your job? Do you feel like you could be doing MORE? That you are not using your best talents? Are you reevaluating your purpose on earth? These are some of the reasons people take aptitude tests online. They can help you figure out what you probably already know about yourself, and possibly things you do not, as well as discover exactly what you are good at. Sometimes it helps to get a bit of clarity without even knowing you are doing just that. Some tests ask a TON of questions and depending on how you answer they can give you insights into your personality. Some tests ask you to problem solve and this helps determine your abilities, strengths, weaknesses and skill set. But one of the exciting things about career aptitude tests is that the results can filter into jobs that match your personality and skill set that maybe you were not considering. Nothing like that lightbulb going off that says “Wow I had no idea I could do that! That would actually interest me!” We’re not always the best gauges of our own abilities.
An interesting and pretty involved personality and career test can be found on http://www.sokanu.com/. Sokanu (pronounced “So Can You!”) is a free platform that almost borders on social network, for members to assess their interests, personality type, abilities, values and preferred work and social environments in order to find job and career matches that will lead to successful and satisfying careers. Once you have registered with either Facebook or entering your simple information, you start answering questions on the Discover Page (which is powered by their Career Genome Project). You respond to each question by clicking on the Agree or Disagree slider and answer according to what describes you the best. Try not to overthink your answers and keep moving through. It took me over 30 minutes to complete the “test” and it does become a bit tedious and repetitive. BUT, the career interests that it matched me to were right on the money and they provide somewhat detailed information on each of the suggested career options.
Another interesting personality temperament test is from Keirsey.com. The quick test is 70 questions of The Keirsey Temperament Sorter, and it helps you discover what type of temperament you have: Artisan, Guardian, Rational or Idealist. It is free but there is an option to purchase the full report as well. After taking this test I again scored similarly and my results fell within the same area of interest as the Sokanu test.
Once you get these results and suggested careers for them, you can have a good basis for some research into what would be a good fit for you and your strengths. A career is a very important choice and you will spend the majority of your time at work, so you should enjoy it! As the wise Confucius said “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” And of course once you figure out what job you want to pursue Schoolbound can help find you the perfect school to fit your life and schedule.
